Maths
We want every child to learn to love and appreciate maths and enjoy learning about it. We believe that this will prepare them for using maths in their future. At Longsight we use the White Rose scheme to teach maths.
In a Big Life school, children will:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of maths
- Reason mathematically
- Solve problems by applying their maths.
Our youngest children develop basic skills, like counting, sorting and matching. We do this through play, singing and talking, so that they learn maths in a way that works for them.
The rest of our curriculum also helps children apply what they learn in maths. For example, dates and chronology are taught in history, while geography helps them to understand distances and direction.
Teachers make sure that no child is left behind and that children with knowledge gaps are supported.
Finally, we know that some parents and carers aren’t confident around maths or worry that a lot has changed from when they were at school. We work with them to support their child, with a range of maths workshops and information sessions.
